West Bali National Park (TNBB)
West Bali National Park (TNBB) is a hidden gem situated at the westernmost tip of the Island of the Gods, offering a soothing contrast to the hustle and bustle of southern Bali. Spanning an area of over 19,000 hectares, this national park is a remarkable mosaic of ecosystems, ranging from tropical rainforests and seasonal forests to vast savannahs and mangrove forests that serve as coastal defences. Its biodiversity makes it the last stronghold for Bali’s increasingly rare native flora and fauna.
The area’s most prized icon is the Bali Starling (Leucopsar rothschildi), an endemic bird with pristine white plumage and mesmerising blue accents around its eyes. Once on the brink of extinction, intensive conservation efforts within the national park have brought new hope for their survival in the wild. In addition to the Bali Starling, visitors often spot deer roaming freely along the shoreline or hiding amidst the lush savannah forest.
The beauty of TNBB extends beyond the mainland. Off its coast lies Menjangan Island, renowned as one of Indonesia’s premier diving and snorkelling spots. The waters around the island offer exceptionally clear visibility, showcasing vertical coral walls inhabited by thousands of colourful fish, turtles, and enchanting soft corals. The tranquillity of the underwater world provides a unique spiritual experience for anyone who dives there.
Visually, West Bali National Park offers a unique aesthetic—a blend of the calm blue sea against a backdrop of lush green mountains during the rainy season, or dramatic African-style scenery when the grasslands turn yellow in the dry season. For nature photography enthusiasts, the natural lighting here provides a sharp yet soft quality, particularly when the sun rises behind the silhouettes of dry trees.
